Malin (coolest coincidence ever)

Malin (coolest coincidence ever)

I'm on the bike at the automatic level crossing at Lida, waiting for the commuter train to pass. Malin who was out jogging in the sunshine, makes a comment about how typical it is to arrive just as a train is closing in, and we start talking. I notice that she is pregnant and Malin says that the baby is due in January. Boy or a girl, I ask. Don't know she says with a big smile. Malin who is a big animal lover opened a pet store with a couple of friends a few years back. It's still open but I now work for an insurance company she tells me. Once the baby is born I'm hoping that we can also add a dog to the family. Malin is a sporty girl, having played soccer for many years. As a kid she was into diving. Have you tried anything else I ask. Yes, para gliding she says. Cool, I reply, and start to tell her about one of my previous strangers, Johan Henschen who had an accident while para motoring abroad. She looks at me and laughs, that's my dad! How cool is that! Apparently Johan hasn't told his daughter about being photographed for the 100 Strangers Project, so I tell her the very interesting story that meeting generated. I've been reading a few articles in the media lately about the author Helena Henschen, who has written two very interesting books (one about a famous murder story in the family), and asks Malin if it is the same family. It is she says, Helena is my dads sister. That's enough coincidences for today and as the train has passed by a few minutes ago we say goodbye.

Wildlife Encounter

I met this Roe Deer the other day close to the Slätmossen nature park in Handen. There's a children's playground some fifty metres away, where a bunch of dogs were playing on the playground slide while barking like mad. That didn't seem to bother the deer, who had it's eyes fixed on me.

European Heritage Days

Janstorp Cottage

This is an old cottage called Janstorp located next to the homestead museum in Västerhaninge. The museum used to be known as Sotholms Härads Tingshus. Originally this little cottage was located in Handen along the Nynäs Road. Last Sunday the museum and the cottage, along with 200 other similar places around Sweden was open for the public during Kulturhusens dag, Savour the Buildings, part of the European Heritage Days. The theme of the 2008 European Heritage Days focuses on buildings which are devoted to producing, preparing or serving food and drink. I met a few of the members, including the photographer, historian and author Bo Stjernström. I have a copy of one of his books, Life and Death at Näringsberg, that he wrote together with his wife Anita who I also briefly met today . I wasnt really hungry, so I skipped the food and enjoyed some coffee and cake with Sune Nilsson another member of the homestead society. I also met the mother of one of my strangers, Agnes, that I met at the gallery in Österhaninge one week ago.

Armed Robbery

At the helicopter

There was an armed robbery at Jordbro today. Two men held up a security guard vehicle from Loomis at Moränvägen at the Jordbro Galleria. The robbers disappeared on mopeds. I was in the area and decided to stay around. Took some photos of police cars, onlookers and a police helicopter that circled the area for half an hour before landing in a park. More police arrived and after 20 minutes the helicopter did another search of the area.

Jarmo

Jarmo Alanko

This is Jarmo Alanko. He is in charge of Security, Health and Environment at Drefvikens Värmeverk, part of Vattenfall, (the largest generator of heat in Europe). I met him yesterday during the open house day at the Thermal Power Plant in Jordbro. We sat down at a table and talked for about ten minutes. Jarmo is used to talking to the press and media, and handles some of the company's contacts with the authority's. He has appeared in court on a few occasions for the company, on environmental issues, always on the winning side. He told me a lot about his job and the new power plant that will be built here over the next two years. Jarmo has appeared in a few advertisements for Vattenfall. On a recent TV ad shoot, eight people worked hard for ten hours and I appeared in that ad for about two seconds he told me with a laugh! He is often out talking to students at the University's. Four times every year we rent the Marine World Kolmården and invites some 10 000 clients, so I'm very at ease interacting with a lot of people he said. He also told me this story. Jarmo who originally comes from Eskilstuna is married and has two kids. The family lives in Västerhaninge. On his free time he enjoys working out in the gym. I'm a health freak, and average eight sessions per week he said.

Biofuel Power Plant

Biofuel Power Plant

A panorama made from four photos, showing the Jordbro thermal power station. Owned by Vattenfall, the largest generator of heat in Europe. There was an open house here today. I took the guided tour. Very interesting. The source of energy comes from wooden pellets, regarded as one of the substitutes for fossil fuels like coal and oil for heating. If you want to know how it works there's more info from Vattenfall here.

At the Museum

At The Museum

Last Saturday during Tungelsta Day saw the opening of a new museum at the Tungelsta Park. You will find the museum on the second floor of the Torklada. It will feature items relating to Tungelsta's gardening history. Back in the 1950ths there was more that 70 horticulture businesses in Tungelsta. Now in 2008 there are nine left. Here you see Mats Wiger in what must be his gallery look. That's a mighty fine wooden box he's saying to himself I think.

The Vice President

Tony

This is Tony. I met him at the cruiser meet in Handen a while back. He is the Vice President of the Southern Streeters, a greaser club from Södertälje. The club has been around since 1994 and has 21 members.Tony drives a 1960 Ford Starline. He bought the car for 50 000 SEK three years ago. I have probably used another 100 000 SEK on the Ford since then he told me. He was at the meet with friends from the club, and with his girlfriend, their new born baby and his mother. In his professional life Tony works as a truck driver. Cars are his big hobby and his latest project is an old Buick. He also told me that the bass player in the band on stage as we spoke was a member of the Southern Streeters. And as it happened Kenny has a great photo of that same Bass Player.

Agnes & Martin

Agnes & Martin ♫

Music from the Middle Ages

There was a concert with music from the Middle Ages, performed by the duo Agnes & Martin at the Art Gallery in Österhaninge this afternoon. I learned about that from a poster I noticed today, so I decided to check it out. I arrived at the gallery 15 minutes before the show started. The duo was sitting in the garden and I had the chance to talk to Martin before their performance, and after the gig I got a few words with Agnes. They are busy people. Martin has a smithy, shop and a museum (opens in November 2008), in Handen where you can also buy jewellery designed by Agnes. Together they have a son, called Lo, and the family lives next to the museum. As I started to talk to Martin we exchanged cards, and that's when I realised who he was. Funnily enough I had a conversation about Martin and Agnes only a week ago when I met one of my previous strangers, the architect Rikard Lundin. Rikard asked me if I knew about the museum, which I did and we then talked about Martin & Agnes, so it's very typical that I should meet the two of them a week later! Agnes comes from Västerhaninge and she's currently taking a course in Museum Education at the Stockholm University. The two of them often tour the country with a group called Tattarklanen. It's like a medieval and Viking tivoli (a travelling theme park), Martin told me. With performances, music and more. We have also played in some of the restaurants in the Old Town in Stockholm he added.

Tungelsta Day

Rain rain and more rain

Today was Tungelsta day. Lots of market stalls at the soccer pitch in front of the school selling stuff that are of no use. There was also some fun rides for the kids, and a few bands where playing. Unfortunately it rained non-stop all day. I walked down to the park where I talked to some of the local gardeners that were selling flowers. The cafeteria was filled to capacity. Which was nice, as you could buy locally themed postcards made by me there! On the second floor of the Torklada, a museum opened today. There you will be able to learn all about the history of Tungelsta. Then I walked over to the old station house where today you can buy locally produced handicraft. Oh, and another fun fact. I was stopped by at least ten people that I didn't know, but who had seen my photos either on this blog or at flickr, so to all of you, it was nice to see you and I'm glad you all enjoy my photos!

Fun Coincidence

Emma & John

How cool is this. At the Cruiser Meet I was chatting with John about the fact that I previously had met and photographed his sister Anna for the Stranger Project I suddenly recognised him. We played soccer in the same team 34 years ago! John was the first player to be scouted to our team of 11 year-olds in Tungelsta all those years ago. Our coach had seen him and managed to get him to join Tungelsta. He was a very quick forward, I was a defender. I left the team after a few years and so did he. At that time he was also a decent gymnast. I haven't seen him since we played together. His pretty girl friend is called Emma. They met online back in February via a dating site and fell in love. And a couple of weeks ago she took the step of leaving her home town and move in with John in Sorunda.

Madde & Sandra

Madde & Sandra

At the Cruiser Meet on Saturday there was a Greaser Girl contest. I decided to find one of the contestants and take a portrait for the 100 Strangers project. But that turned out to be tricky, I saw no one wearing the numbered page. I asked Kenny if he had spotted any good looking greaser girls, and he said that he was there when they picked the contestants but he had only seen one! That explained the situation, so I took another round with my eyes open for pretty girls, and I got lucky as I found not one, but two pretty girls! Meet Madde and Sandra. They are friends and were at the meet with their buddy Benny ,having arrived in style in his Ford. Madde (to the left), lives in Västerhaninge and works at a Supermarket in Handen. Sandra comes from Vendelsö, and works as a youth centre employee. They often travel to music festivals together. I asked them if they had done anything unusual and told them what Ego had done, as an example to what I wanted to hear. And they gave me two examples. But after thinking it over I have decided not to let you know what the girls told me. And in the end I'm sure they will be quite happy about that. Still, it was nice to meet them. If I see them again maybe I can get some other stories that I can tell you about.

Stina

Stina

Heading home after a warm and lengthy bike ride last week I had to stop when I noticed a beautiful girl at a bus stop in Västerhaninge. I parked the bike and walked over for a chat. Meet Stina. Or Kenny as her friends call her. She's originally from Täby but lives in Västerhaninge today. As she was waiting for the bus I decided to shoot first and ask my questions later. When I showed Stina the photos she told me that she took a photo course at Kulturama, the leading secondary school of Performing Arts in Scandinavia, that she attended a few years ago. We focused on film and not digital photography she said. Talking about this reminded her of when the class was outside Rosenbad just when the former Prime Minister Göran Persson announced his retirement. The place was filled with photographers and we were right there in the middle of things she told me. Later Stina had to quit school as she suffered from depression. But now after some time at a treatment centre she's feeling OK again. So what are your plans for the future I asked. My dream is to become a movie director she told me. She's also into music and plays the guitar and writes her own songs. Anything online that I can hear I asked, no not yet, I mostly sit at home and play. At this stage I took a few more shots of her and then we said our goodbyes.

Vegabaren

Vegabaren

This is Vegabaren, a hamburger joint in Handen. When it first opened some fifty years ago it was the first Drive-in kiosk in Sweden. For the last forty years it has been a meeting place for Raggare from all over the country. On Saturday there was a big meet here. A few hundred cars, motorcycles and lots of interesting people. Live music and more. I spent a few hours walking around with my camera. Talked to a few people, met some friends. Shot a few portraits for the 100 Strangers Project.

The President

The President

This is Robban. His friends also call him Lång-Robban, or Tall Robert, which is weird since I'm not that tall, he told me. We met close to Vegabaren in Handen. The hamburger bar that was Sweden's first Drive-in kiosk when it opened back in 1958. Saturday saw a big car meet with greasers from all over the country visiting. Robban is the president of the biggest greasers club in Stockholm. It is called Moonshine Cruisers. The club has been around since 1985. We have 18 full members that have the club vest and around 90 other sponsoring members. Tonight we are holding a big party at our club house in Farsta for all our visiting friends. There are people here from all over Sweden, even from as away as Kiruna ( 1310 km), so it will be a fun night. Greasers have been driving out to this famous hamburger bar for forty years. This annual meet is the owners way of paying back for all those years, Robban told me. Professionally Robban works as an electrician. He has a few cars of course. He arrived with his girlfriend in his 1969 Chrysler 300 Convertible.

2008 Cruiser Meet

Dare to be disgusting

Every year Raggare from all over Sweden meet at Vegabaren for a get together. There's live music and hundreds of cars and much more. On the wind shield you can read: Dare to be disgusting. They misspelled it, but I'm sure you get the picture. These guys were hoping to win the category for worst "Råttsoffa". The worst rat seat if you translate it to English. They were already drunk when I arrived. The TV crews were drawn to them and that made them very proud and even more drunk. Not sure if they won but they got my vote. I talked to another photographer who said that the car had all it's paper in order and that they had driven all the way from Värmland without any problems. If so that is very impressive! From the 2008 Cruiser Meet at Vegabaren in Handen on Saturday. 2008 Cruiser Meet at Vegabaren. I will probably show a few more photo in the coming week so stay tuned!

Haninge Dance Studio

Haninge Dance Group

As I walk around the Poseidon's square in Handen Saturday, during Haninge day, I suddenly see a group of young women dressed as cowgirls and I decide to check them out and perhaps get my first group photo for this project. I ask who they are and they explain that they are members of the Haninge Dance Studio. We are going on stage in a few minutes one of the girls tell me. I quickly explain about the 100 Strangers Project and they line up for a group portrait. So here we go. Starting from the left, this is Fredrik, Kimmie, Caroline, Karin, Jenny, Philip, My and Sofie. The guys are not dancers, we just needed two cowboys for this act. And as they wanted two really cool guys, they picked us said Fredrik. The girls have been dancing together since 2001, but this constellation have only been together for six months. Their ages range from 17 to 23.Today we will perform a modern jazz dance act with influences of western dance they tell me as they mention that you can hire the group for a dance show via ther web site. A few minutes later they are performing on the big stage. I'm no dance expert but I liked what I saw and the audience looked very impressed and gave them a big hand of appluads.

A Cowboy

Kent

Saturday was Haninge Day. Which was celebrated around Poseidon's Square and in the Cultural Centre at Handen. The theme this year was Country & Western, so I went looking for a suitable stranger. And found one close to the big stage. This is Kent Olofsson. He is my second stranger from Värmland, the first one was Spik-Anders. Kent was here to perform with a group of friends. They call themselfes Åldtimers (Oldtimers). A bit of a word pun. They do all sorts of western things with lasso's, axes and CAS shooting. They have been touring Värmland and Sweden for 7 years. He told me that they normally visit High Chaparral six times every year.In his professional life Kent is a plåtslagare (something for you to translate). At the moment his working on a construction site in Oslo, Norway, so he spends 5 days of the week in Norway, living in an apartment paid for by the company he works for. On weekends he enjoyes western riding with his mates.

On my visit I only met a few people, and the beach was nearly deserted as you can see here. The weather was perfect, a bit windy, around 20 C and a clear blue sky with a few small clouds here and there. There's a few islets here with funny names including The Friday, The Saturday, The Chickens and one called Hymen all part of a bird protection area.

Kalle

Kalle

The summer break is over for the kids in Haninge. So I figured I'd find me a happy school kid for the 100 strangers project. And I did, sort of. I forgot to ask about the happy part. This is Kalle. He is fifteen and lives in Handen, where I met him yesterday. It was his first day back to school. He's a ninth grader at Rudanskolan in Handen. On his free time he enjoys hanging out with his friends. Kalle used to play tennis at Torvalla but had to give up the sport as it became to expensive. Just like me you can often find him down at Lake Rudan where he will go for a ride on the mountain bike trail. One time I hit a tree and ended up at the hospital from where I came home with 8 stitches he told me. Who ever said it's easy to be a teenager these days?

This is the museum at Morarna on the Gålö peninsula. Run by Gålö Gärsar , the local homestead society. I met some of the members when I visited the charcoal kiln thing last week. Gärsar was a nickname given to the men that grew up at Gålö, and it's also the name of a fish. And now you know that! At the museum you can see how people lived here in the archipelago at Gålö many years ago. Obviously it was closed on my visit!

They live at Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm. They were on their way to the Kyrkskolan Gallery for a look at this years Art Promenade when I met them at the ancient grave field in Jordbro. I gave them directions and we started to talk. We are on our way to the island of Utö where we will spend the night in our tent, something Elvira is looking forward to, they told me. Other pastimes that the family enjoys include trekking in Jämtland. Karin is a psychology student, with one year left before graduating from Stockholm University. Jens is a Member of the European Parliament in Brussels where he works for global justice, animal rights and environmental issues. He is a member of the The Left Party of Sweden, as they call them selves.

Johan

Johan

At the charcoal kiln on the Gålö peninsula the other day, I decided to find me a stranger among the burners to photograph. This guy stood out a bit with his t-shirt (they were all wearing the same type of hat). Meet Johan Borg. He invited me into the burner's hut for a chat. The temperature in the hut to me felt like something you would experience in a sauna ( I had a 20 km bike ride behind me and it was 20C from a clear blue sky). So it was kinda warm in there with a fire burning! Johan is of course one of the members of the Gålö historical association that built the kiln. As I started to sweat I asked Johan some questions. Bonde means Farmer in Swedish and that's his occupation. His family operates the Stegsholm farm that I happened to visit earlier this summer. Three generations of his family still lives at the farm. Johan has lived there all his life. Today he is married to Åse and they have a couple of kids, the son Victor and their newborn daughter Emma, who the charcoal kiln was named after. I asked if he and Åse had any fun hobbies or any interesting holidays to tell me about. They just laughed and said: we work 22 hours every day and have been away on vacation one time over the last six years. Running the big farm take all our time! And then there's the kids. And the café and bakery that they opened eight years ago. As Stegsholm is a part of the nature reserve, they get many visitors and the café is a huge success.

Charcoal Kiln

Charcoal Kiln

The craft of charcoal burning recreated at Gålö. The local history association Gålö Gärsar has made a charcoal kiln that was ready to be fired yesterday. It will burn for a few days and will have to be watched by the burners 24/7. To keep it burning you need to make small holes for some air to get in and also repair any part of the kiln that slips. When the charcoal is ready the burning is extinguished by water and the kiln is then opened up. During this lengthy process the burners live nearby in a typical charcoal burner's hut that I will show you tomorrow. This years kiln has been named Emma. Emma is the youngest daughter of Johan and Åse, two members of the history association that I met and talked to. For the next few days everyone is welcome to visit. You can sit down and enjoy some food and there will be live music and other entertainment from Friday to Sunday. And anyone of the burners will tell you the history of the charcoal kiln.

The Zodiac Man

Not sure what this guy is doing. From Lower Lake Rudan in Handen yesterday. I have never seen a boat in this little lake before. Looks like he could be testing the water quality or something. This is a fishing lake and during the summer months it's also popular with swimmers and sunbathers. Although I didn't see anyone swimming here today.

A very upset squirrel

A very upset squirrel

Hey, where's the bird food? I'm hungry!

Every day this summer, this squirrel and one of his buddy's have been visiting as I'm feeding the birds.During the summer there really isn't necessary to give the birds anything to eat, but when I quit filling the bird feeders they flew in and landed on the veranda table, trying to steal my breakfast. So I gave up and now the squirrels take advantage of that!

Lotta

Lotta

This is Lotta. I met her at the Gullringskärrets nature reserve today. She was out riding on one of the family's horses, Wille. The horse seemed a bit nervous (they were fixing a gravel road nearby), so I called out to let them know I was there, and that's how we started talking. Lotta comes from Stockholm and has her horses at the Lövhagen stable at Kalvsvik. She's been show jumping with her other horse, Cheila Rose with some good results. Lotta works as a dentist in a private practice. She told me that she's always been interested in different sports, and these days the horses took up most of her free time. Lotta got a scholarship to the University of South Carolina where she took the Pre-Med course and during that time she also played tennis for the school.

Meet the Groom

Jonne

Being the day that it is, 080808 I set out to find me a fitting stranger. And I did! Thousands of couples are getting married in Sweden today, and I was lucky enough to met Jonne outside the Västerhaninge church. The lucky bride (who I didn't meet), is called Angeliqa. Jonne works as a dock laborer in Stockholm. On his free time he enjoys working out in the gym and he also plays handboll for Tungelsta. As we were talking, the wedding photographer showed up so I decided to speed up things with a few quick questions. What's the scariest or dumbest thing you have ever done? That must be driving my motorcycle at 280 km/h on the free way at Länna, he replied. Any other motorcycle stories? Yes, me and Angeliqa was holidaying in Norway, when suddenly we collided with a big bird, it hit me right in the face, that was a bit scary, but we got out of that without any injuries. Normally I would try to ask a few more questions but as the kids waiting in the car were shouting and the wedding photographer was getting ready I decided to take a few shots of Jonne in front of the church and be on my way. As for his red kilt I can only assume that his family comes from Scotland. (If I'm wrong email me when you read this Jonne). Good luck with life as a married man!

Kerstin

I guess you have all seen this scene before. This is my 149th photo of The Old Tree at Välsta. But it's the first time I have been able to combine it with the 100 Strangers Project. This is Kerstin. And Pypszo. They came walking towards me on the path, so all I had to do was wait a while. And after explaining about the project we talked a bit and I took some photos. The horse is a Polish Arabian that's been with her for 17 years. She had planned to compete with Pypszo in Endurance riding but sadly the horse had a leg injury. Kerstin is also a big fan of this tree, (she's originally from Öland where there are many Swedish Whitebeams) and she had also heard the rumours about the planned golf course here, and like me she's against it. These days she lives with her family at Skogås and teaches Swedish at the Farsta Gymnasium, a college-preparatory school. As we talked about the surrounding landscape and the people here in Tungelsta it didn't take me long to figure out that she knew a few people that I know, including Torbjörn, or Stranger #21, as I like to call him. I really like all these coincidences that has happened during this project.

Louise and Ludde

Louise and Ludde

This is Louise. And her dog Ludde. He is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. His real name is Rackaby´s Sir Paul McCartney. I met them today at Skälåker on the Gålö peninsula in Haninge. They were attending the 2008 Tollarspecialen. And they were not alone, as some 365 other Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers were taking part in the event. Louise is thirteen years old and comes from Härnösand. She was diagnosed with diabetes three years ago, and it was then the family decided to get her a dog. She's been competing in dog agility with Ludde for one year now. And as you can see won two prices this morning. Louise were travelling with her parents and the rest of the family in their caravan. This was their fifth event this year. Next week they are going to Åsele and Strömsund so they really have a full calendar. Next year Louise plans to compete in obedience trial. And also in freestyle where the dog dance to music! She also enjoys riding and playing floorball. If you understand Swedish you can check out her website.

Håkan Fohlin

Håkan

It was nearly 30 C when I met Håkan Fohlin the other day. So stopping by the side of the road for a few minutes was just what we needed. He had been on a long bike ride, visiting a friend and was now heading back to Stockholm. Håkan is an actor with nearly 40 years experience. When he attended acting school in Malmö in the seventies it was the second most expensive education in the country. We visited New York, Berlin, London and Paris, I don't think they do that these days he said. Håkan was one of the founders of The Orion Theatre, (Wikipedia article), in Stockholm. He has toured around Sweden and Finland and today I am struggling really hard not to work, he said, which means that he has retired. One reason could be that he has always been a very physical actor in the same style as Gösta Ekman, a critic once wrote, and has fallen off a stage or three during his long career ! Will I find some info about you online I asked, probably not he said, but I have a daughter who works as a supermodel so you are very likely to find photos of her. So I Googled her and Håkan was right about that!

My kind of transport

Tandem Bike with Help Engine

It's the first of the month again. Theme day, and for August the theme is Metal. I choose this beautiful old bike as it is my kind of transport. A classic 1950ths tandem bicycle with a help engine, probably made by Gefle Velocipedfabrik. I found it at the classic car event at Torvalla earlier this summer. Back in the 1950ths that engine would set you back some 425 SEK. I wouldn't mind having one of these cool rides. Although I did see a similar modern bicycle a while back. It's called Powabyke. Probably better for the environment as it runs on a 200 watt motor that you can use turn on if and when you get tired.
