A day at the market

A second bunch of photos from the Old Town Christmas market at Stortorget. I had two cameras with me and these were the snaps I took with the mirrorless Canon. The two photographers were busy photographing the architecture. The women in the last photo made me chuckle a bit as they were sitting there doomscrolling instead of joining the real world. The classic Halmbock has an interesting story.

Old Town Christmas Market

I visited the Christmas market at Stortorget in the Old Town. There have been markets here for more than 700 years. I was there quite early, hoping to beat the crowds, which of course didn't work. But I had a feeling that it would be very crowded and hard to get the clean street photo shots that I prefer, so I brought with me a wide-angle lens which will chock James Wei, but there we go. I did take with me the mirrorless camera as well, but I am yet to go through those photos. Anyway, you could enjoy glögg, candy, hot dogs, hot chocolate or shop for hats, Dala horses, different beverages and much more, which everyone but me did.

Old Town Christmas Market

The Christmas market in the old town is usually very popular. Held at Stortorget, a very historic square in Stockholm. An annual event since 1837. It rained non-stop during my visit, so I walked around with my mirrorless Canon in one hand, and an umbrella in the other. The great thing about this market is that you can't sell crap. It has to be the real deal. Glögg. Polkagrisar. Karameller. Konstsmide. Korvar & viltkött. Hantverk. Sockervadd. Keramik. All the good stuff!

A slow start

It rained all day. Not the best weather for a Christmas market. This was the scene in the old town, at Stortorget in Stockholm. The vendor looked a bit bored and unhappy. No one seemed very interested in spinning the wheel. Clearly a slow start. Theme Day. Slow. More, and happier photos from the market to come!

Christmas Market

This is a bit special. The Christmas market at Stortorget. The most famous market in Stockholm, in the old town. It dates back to 1837, but there has been other markets here for something like seven hundred years! The big square is filled with forty or so red booth where you can buy hot chocolate, mulled wine, waffles and coffee, hot dogs, and of course julmumma. You could try the tombola and maybe win some chocolate. On my visit last Thursday the square was filled with international tourists, school classes and a bunch of locals. The old Courthouse

This is Sotholms Härads Tingshus. Or at least that is what it was for many years. A courthouse in the then Hundred Sotholm. The building dates back to 1731. But the second floor which is what you see here is not that old, it was constructed in 1817. The building was in use as a courthouse up until 1916. Today you will find the local historical association Haninge Hembygdsgille here. I took the photo two days ago during the Christmas Market. I like the symmetry of the building.

A Rock 'n' Roll Christmas

Out walking yesterday I decided to circle the greenhouse in the park in Tungelsta where there was a Christmas Market. On one photo I managed to get a snap of the guitarist in the rock band Lugnet, Bonden Jansson kissing his girlfriend who is wearing a "tomteluva".

The Christmas Gift of the Year

Something knitted for Christmas? How about a pair of mittens with a skull and crossbones pattern? A must for the cool kids. Designed by Birgitta Sergler. Only 220SEK. Found, but not purchased at the Christmas market in the greenhouse in Tungelsta yesterday.

Christmas Market

I visited the annual Christmas market in Tungelsta today. Held in the greenhouse in the park. All items sold here were locally made. We had a beautiful but cold winter day. -6C and a blue sky. And with a lot of snow!

Tungelsta Christmas Market

I visited the annual Christmas market in the park in Tungelsta today. The greenhouse was filled with people. A few members of the local historical association, Folk och Trädgård were selling their homemade handicraft, and you can see two of them here. Liza Sergler on the top photo was selling socks and mittens. Marita Jacobsson specialises in kurbits painting. The felted wool figures are also locally made by Kirsten Rasmussen. If you have a very good memory you might remember a photo I took of the posing Mr. Rasmussen earlier this year.

A Wintery Christmas Market

On Saturday I visited the traditional Christmas Market in Tungelsta, organised by Folk och trädgård. They have built the greenhouse in the park, and the cafe/museum, the two buildings used for the market. I had a look in the museum that now features an oil painting depicting my great grandfather J.F. Jansson. We donated the painting and some photos earlier this year. Over at the crowded greenhouse they had a lottery (photo number 1), and local handicrafters were selling their produce and you could buy anything from books about bread baking, made by Git Lundin (photo number 4), and mittens made by the pelargonium horticulturist Birgitta Sergler (6). Another familiar face was Marion (7), from Stavhäll. I also talked to The Knitter who told me a fun story. She had met a friend who had bought five lottery tickets and won four prices. And as he was too lazy to carry them home, he gave them all to Anna-Greta. Almost everyone I chatted with mentioned Friday's power outage and the fact that it was only -2C and that it was the first time in many years that we had a snowy Christmas market.

A Christmas Market

I met a wight at the Christmas market in the greenhouse. He didn't say much, fortunately there were more talkative guests at the market, and in the slideshow you will see Maria Edström and her cousin Linnéa Mörne. They were helping Maria's mother Eva selling her handicraft. The woman offering me a home-baked cake is Marion Pettersson-Lundberg, she owns the greenhouse together with her husband Torbörn. The bearded fellow is Bengt Pettersson from Kikartorp in Österhaninge. He overheard me talking to Marion, and joined the conversation as we were talking about old greenhouse nurseries in Tungelsta, and we talked a bit about that. Bengt then mentioned a book he recently bought where his house is mentioned and I could inform him that I shot a few of the photos in that book. I took the two panoramic images to show Torbjörn that it is possible to take such photos even with the cheap PowerShot.

I visited a Christmas market today. Held in a greenhouse at Stavhäll in Tungelsta. Met a few people, took some photos, and enjoyed a cup of coffee. One of the artists selling her handicraft at the market was Ana Gull. She told me she was a bit American, as she had studied in the US. I kinda like her ugly,sexy Santa. Unfortunately I didn't have any cash on me, so I couldn't buy the Santa, or the Christmas candle figurine that costed 375 SEK. You can see more of Ana's art at her web site Art 4 Joy.
