Norrmalmstorg

A favorite building. At Norrmalmstorg. So many fun details. Two hundred years ago this very posh square was known as Packartorget. A smelly place with many old sheds where the local fishermen had they fish repacked. A bit different today. This building was designed by the architect Johan Laurentz for the industrialist Johan August Bång. It dates back to 1890. Back then it was an apartment building. Today there are only offices here. Oh, and this is the building that gave us the Stockholm Syndrome back in 1973.

You can't afford this

New apartment building at Ersta on Södermalm in Stockholm. I took another photo here last Autumn when they were finishing up the construction. Designed by Kaminsky Arkitektur, and built by Wallin Bostad. A secret buyer bought the terrace apartment a for 54 000 000 SEK. The reason for that hefty price? Location, location, location.

Årstaviken

Cycling around Södermalm a few days ago I stopped at Tantolunden for a rest and a few photos. The highrises at Sjövikskajen are new of course. Designed by four different architects. The little beach Tantos strandbad is very popular during the Summer. The diving board is also a big hit with the sunbathers. In the background the Årsta railway bridge, which is also a bicycle and pedestrian bridge. The panorama shows an area undergoing a lot of change at the moment. Maybe hard to see, but there's a huge deck down by the water. It opened last Summer, and it can also get very crowded when the weather is nice. The water here is called Årstaviken. It features what I think is the most popular walk in Stockholm. Between 7 km and 10 km, depending on where you walk.

Karolinska University Hospital

I parked the bike and went for a photo walk around the Solna Campus, focusing on Aula Medica. A fun building to photograph and to clean, no doubt. Aula Medica. Campus Solna. Nya Karolinska. The two old buildings are known as Gammelgården and Stenbrottet and are today used by the University.

Sergelskrapan

One of the five highrise buildings at Sergels torg, nicknamed Sergelskrapan, behind scaffolding. Built sixty years ago, so the facade needed a facelift. All the windows will be replaced. It will look like it did when it was new with a bronze colored aluminium facade.

A glowing blue heart for Christmas

At the Folksam building at Skanstull. The blue heart will be seen there until mid-January, I think. Last year it was a glowing pink heart here.

One hundred days of darkness

November is here and with it the dark days. So I will probably take more night photos from now on. Took these yesterday as I managed to get out after the stomach problems. The first photo shows STHLM 01. A newish highrise with a sky bar, which is the rule these days. Then comes Folksamhuset. From 1960. At Skanstull, my aunt worked at that insurance company for many years. The third photo shows The Social Lounge at a hotel at Johanneshov. Lastly, the 3 Headquarters, also at Johanneshov.

Brutalism

Cycling home from my short visit to the Tyresta National Park recently I decided to bike home via Brandbergen where I took one, (1), photo. Of a newish apartment building close to the mall. Called Tornet. The Tower. The jury is still out whether it is cool or just ugly. I have heard both opinions, but my photography eye likes it.

The Summer House

Täcka Udden. The story is that Carl Gustaf Tessin held a Midsummer party here. With many prominent guests, including a few royals, and it was talked about for a long time, hence the name, Täcka, an old word, no longer in use, but it means beautiful, so it must have been quite a party. Later the property was rebuilt by a "Grosshandlare", or merchant. Today owned by the Wallenberg family. The garage in the second photo today houses the family archive. The third photo shows the boathouse with new and old buildings at Kvarnholmen in Nacka on the other side of Saltsjön.

Snickarglädje

Swedish word of the day. Snickarglädje. Törnerska villan located on a hill called Björkbacken at Förrådsbacken at Östermalm in Stockholm. From 1870. Built by a pyrotechnician called A.R. Törner.

Birger Jarls Bazaar

Birger Jarls basar. From 1884. One of the first buildings to be constructed along the then brand-new street, Birger Jarlsgatan. One of the first office buildings in Stockholm. It also housed a bazaar and several artist studios. August Strindberg had his first exhibition here. The architect was Ernst Haegglund. If he came back today for a look, chances are that he would not recognize the facade. Today owned by Hufvudstaden.

Hjorthagen

Three photos from the old Värtagasverket at Hjorthagen. Back in the day this whole area was designed by one famous architect. Ferdinand Boberg.

Wenner-Gren Center

This is the Wenner-Gren Center at Sveaplan in Stockholm. A 25-story steel building, currently under renovation by Fabege. Nice to see the old advertising from Kellogg's Cornflakes and Kungsörnen coming to light as workers remove the old facade. The murals date back to 1962 when the building was constructed. A coup back in the day from the builder Axel Wenner-Gren as the murals had not been approved by the City. The architects back in the day were Sune Lindström and Alf Bydén from Vattenbyggnadsbyrån AB. I read in a recent news article that the people from Kungsörnen seemed happy about the old ads, I buy their products almost every week. And for good measure I have added a second photo where you can see the original curtain wall facade. The glass in three different colors came from Belgium. Oh, and if you look closely you can see a worker on the scaffolding.

A classic facade

Across the street from Stockholm Public Library at Sveavägen. An apartment building from 1886. The architect was most likely G Sällström.

Architecture

Parkhuset. Bjälbogatan. A wooden apartment building with balconies made from concrete. Situated at Rosenlundsparken on Södermalm. By VERA Arkitekter. Finished in 2021. A total of 32 apartments. Won an award a few years ago. There's a Winter Garden on the roof terrace, open for anyone living in the building.

Mynttorget

Mynttorget. Ledamotshuset. A Government building in the old town. This part of the building with the columns dates back around 400 years. The rest of the building have been renovated a number of times, since. This is the same square where Greta Thunberg used to protest every Friday for a number of years btw.

Who is that?

Riding my bike over the Skanstull bridge into Södermalm I spotted something new. A weird figure standing on the roof terrace at the Katsan building. The building itself is the headquarters of White Architects. They designed the building, and they were responsible for this part of the city, Hammarby sjöstad that I have shown you many times here on the blog. For good measure, I added a few photos of the building taken over the last few years.

The bubbly hotel

The hotel next to the national football arena in Solna. Designed by the architects at Wingårdhs. The idea for the circular windows came from Karolina Keyzer, who today is the City Architect in Stockholm. You have probably seen it here on the blog before, but it looks like they are cleaning the facade at the moment, and that's why I took another photo.
