Cykelbud

Cykelbud
Swedish word of the day. Cykelbud. Bicycle messenger. From that really warm Spring day last week. I was waiting at the same stop light at Nybroplan when he rolled up.

Up for a challenge

Mats
I met two cyclists during my Winter promenade yesterday, a bit surprising considering the weather and the unploughed roads, but there you go. Anywho, this is Mats Wiger. Born and bred in Tungelsta, just like me. He was on his way to work, and complained a bit about the conditions. Back when my family still had the greenhouse nursery, I would see him almost every day. Mats ran a truck company, and would drop by twice a day to pick up flowers that he delivered to Årsta partihallar, the big wholesale market at Årsta in Stockholm. A good business considering that Tungelsta have had more than one hundred greenhouse nurseries. These days there are maybe five left.

Smile for the camera

El Sistema
Cycling on Strandvägen in Stockholm a couple of warm days ago, I parked the bike on the walkway by the water. Always crowded with tourists waiting for a ferry to the archipelago. But this time I decided to take a few photos of my fellow cyclists. This guy gave me a fun smile, so I will pay him back by posting the photo for the City Daily Photo Theme Day for June. Smile. Oh, and El Sistema Stockholm is a school for young musicians. They have around 2000 students eager to learn how to play the violin, the trombone, the cello or any other instrument.

Penny-farthing

Penny-farthing
Ordinary High Standard. I took my usual shortcut through the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Skogskyrkogården when I saw him cycling towards me. So I stopped and jumped off my eBike. Grabbed the camera bag, got the camera out, ready to shoot, but he was already past me, shouting, I have no brakes you know! So I ran after him on the sidewalk and managed to get this photo.

Ice cream break

Ice cream break
A bicycle police stopping for an ice cream at the pier Lugnets terrass at Hammarby Sjöstad. Seemed like the smart thing to do as it was one of those warm Summer days. There are around forty police officers riding around Stockholm, all of them using mountainbikes from Santos, a Dutch brand.

Autumn Cycling

Autumn Cycling
A woman cycling down the 888-meter-long sju brunnars stig, the seven springs way, at the Woodland cemetery, or Skogskyrkogården as we call it.

Liggcykel
Swedish word of the day. Liggcykel. Recumbent bicycle. Met this happy chap on my way to Nynäshamn earlier in the week.

End Of The Road

End Of The Road
Time for some contemplating while waiting for the ferry at Årsta brygga. Or maybe just taking a breather like I did.

The Friendly Cyclist

Friendly Cyclist
I had just jumped off the bike and was slowly walking along a field near Aspen Hill in Österhaninge when I noticed a cyclist climbing up Österhaningevägen at Husby so I quickly changed the camera settings to one that works for panning photos and had time to shoot four photos of this happy cyclist.

Rullskidåkare Disappearing Cyclist
It was a fine Autumn day for it. Roller skier and cyclist along Stavsvägen in Tungelsta. Same place as yesterdays photo.

Next Stop Lövhagen

Next Stop Lövhagen
The old road to Nynäshamn used to be known as the road of death. So eventually a new road was built for all the heavy traffic between Stockholm and the port city of Nynäshamn. Which also means that these days the old road is only used by a few locals and a lot of cyclists, like this bunch that I spotted at Ösmo on Sunday, and half an hour later when they arrived to Lövhagen.

The second day of Summer

✌ Bianchi Sportful Happiness
Cycling on the old road to Nynäshamn these days means that you are only likely to meet other, (happy), cyclists. Very different from a few years ago when this was one of the most accident ridden roads in the country. The new highway opened for traffic back in 2010 and the only people using the old road are locals and cyclists like these happy riders.

Orange Crescent

Orange Crescent
Great bike. But I wouldn't ride it wearing sneakers when it's -12C and snowing. As seen along Allévägen in Tungelsta earlier in the week.

Panning Shots

Ride of Hope Peace Cannondale Stanley Security
Four panning shots of cyclists taking part in the VELOTHON Stockholm race that took place yesterday. I'm still going through my photos. I took around 800 photos and was quite pleased with that number. Then as the closing car drove by in the early afternoon I invited two photographers that I had just met to coffee at the FikAnn cafe and was impressed by both of them. Both when it came to equipment and numbers. Lars told me that he had been out since five in the morning! He shot at f/11 when snapping cyclists coming directly at him so to speak. He used a tripod and didn't move around much, very unlike my method as I prefer the panning action. The other guy, (didn't get his name), used a zoom lens ten times more expensive than mine and he had taken 3800 photo during the race. Expect a few more posts from this bike race in the coming days.
