A very unique spire

A very unique spire
The unique cast iron spire at the Riddarholmen church. Only one other in all of Europe in this style. In Rouen. It is 24 meter high. It weighs 125 tonnes. It consists of 2000 cast iron pieces. And it is coming down for a three-year-long renovation. It was designed by Erik Gustaf Göthe in 1838 after the original tower was destroyed in a fire a few years earlier. Most parts are newer as there were another renovation in the 1960s. But back then they used PCB and asbestos so that needs to be replaced now.

Solna Roundchurch

Solna kyrka Medieval Church
This was where I was heading after taking the snowdrop photo in yesterday's post. To church! Which is kinda funny as I am the biggest atheist in the history. But I do like history. And my Flickr friend Paul's parents got married here many years ago, so I promised him I would swing by for a few photos. More facts about the church on it's Wikipedia page

St Peter and St Sigfrid

St Peter and St Sigfrid
The English church at Diplomat City in Stockholm. It has an interesting history. The first design was abandoned, and a new architect took over and redesigned the church. It was built at Wallingatan in Stockholm. Construction finished in 1866. And then in 1913 it was moved, stone by stone, to where it stands today at Diplomatstaden on Östermalm. One reason for the move was an initiative from the British-born Princess Margaret of Connaught.

The brick church

The brick church
The modern brick Church in Tungelsta. Designed by the architect Rolf Bergh back in the early 1970s. I remember climbing up here during the construction when I was ten years old. It was fun and scary at the same time. Before the church, there was a greenhouse nursery here, and the first people to be buried at the cemetery, next to the church, were the gardener and his wife.

Gustaf Vasa kyrka

Gustaf Vasa kyrka
A majestic church at Vasastaden in Stockholm. Gustaf Vasa church. In Neo-Baroque style. King Gustaf Vasa, in English, Gustav I of Sweden is probably one of the more famous rulers of this country. And as I am typing this, 15 000 skiers are taking part in the annual ski race, named after him. Vasaloppet. A 90 km ski race with an interesting history.

Vanadislunden times seven

A Summer Cloud Girl in evening sun Vanadislundsreservoaren Norra tornen Stefanskyrkan Nyponet Open Windows
I decided to eat my lunch at a park, which is always a good choice in the Summer. So here are seven photos taken from Vanadislunden, a park in an area of Stockholm that has a fun nickname. It is known as Siberia. It was considered so far away from the central parts of Stockholm that it was like being deported to live there back in the day when they started building houses here. In the top photo, you can see the Gustav Vasa church tower at Odenplan. The girl has a great view over the city, from the top of the hill. She is known as, flicka i aftonsol. Made by the sculptor Anders Jönsson some seventy years ago. In the third photo, we can see Vanadislundsreservoaren. That is a longish word for the old water reservoir. Designed by Gustaf Améen a century ago. Many people mistake it for something else, and I guess it does look a bit like an old fortress. The Northern Towers can be seen from all over the city. Next the church with the beautiful name, for obvious reasons. Sankt Stefans kyrka. Built just over a century ago. Oh, and behind the fence there are a lot of nearly naked people having an excellent time. In the sixth photo, we see Nyponet. A twenty-one-story apartment building at Körsbärsvägen. Very close to both the university and to KTH. The first student apartment in the country. Built on a hillside in the mid 1950s. The architect was Dag Ribbing. And lastly, walking down the hill towards Sveavägen we pass buildings belonging to Cederdals Malmgård. The only buildings of this type still in existence. All one-room apartments. Built a century ago. Two of the original four buildings are still here today. They were modernized back in the early 1970s.

Maria kyrka

Maria kyrka Evert Taube Headstone
St. Mary Magdalene Church and cemetery, Bellmansgatan, Södermalm. Construction started in 1588. A very quiet spot in Stockholm, but at the same time just a few meters from the busy Hornsgatan street. On my recent visit, I counted maybe 7 people here. One guy reading from a bench. Three locals discussing current events. One woman just using the cemetery as a shortcut, and two people talking at the door to the old church. I decided to photograph a few headstones, and this is probably the most famous people resting here. The beloved troubadour Evert Taube, and his wife Astri.

The Pallbearers

The Pallbearers
I took my first bike ride of the year to Nynäshamn on a sunny day last week. Made my first pit-stop at the church in Ösmo. It is around 900 years old. The pallbearers were standing outside the church as I took this. A few minutes later they were hard at work with a coffin. If you want to read up on the church there is a PDF-folder in English here.

Gustaf Adolfskyrkan

Gustaf Adolfskyrkan
Designed by Carl Möller back in 1892, this was a garrison church for Svea Livgarde at Östermalm in Stockholm. Some construction work was done by people from the regiment. Today it belongs to the Swedish church. Named after Gustavus Adolphus. Photographed as a panorama with the Canon 6D using the Sigma 50mm lens. This is in the same area of Stockholm as the circular tower I showed you ten days ago.

The Medieval Church

The Medieval Church
I am not someone who will visit a church anytime soon. But this is the cemetery where most of my family rests, so I do visit, with camera, every now and then. This is the Medieval church in Västerhaninge, the oldest part are around 800 years old. It was hit by lighning once and I guess that will happen once every 800 years or so. You have met the pretty priest, Sara, that works here a couple of times. This time I took a walk around the cemetery because of the mist.

Mörkö Kyrka

Mörkö kyrka
The medieval church at Mörkö. Some parts of the building date back just over 700 years. It has looked like this since around 1780. The aristocratic family Bonde that live on the island since a few hundred years has paid for some of the work on the church over time. I showed you their castle last Winter, press here to see that post.

A Medieval Church

Graffiti Church Tower
The atheist out shooting churches again. This time the medieval church in Västerhaninge. Seen from Ribby where someone decided to graffiti up this electrical substation or whatever it is. And also from further away, from Hanveden where it looks like the church sits right in the middle of the forest.

All Saints Day

November Afternoon
it is All Saints Day today. That means that it will be crowded at the cemeteries, and there will be a lot of flickering candles there. Took this photo earlier in the week as I walked through the cemetery at the medieval church in Västerhaninge.

Black and White

After the Harvest Medieval Roof Two photos in black and white. First shows a canola near Kalvsvik after the harvest. Before, it would have looked something like this. In the background you can see the Medieval church in Österhaninge. And up on the roof of that church, a guy from a company called Kyrktak (Church Roof). He is spraying pine tar on the roof.
