Trying to blend in

Arriving home today I saw and heard a Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis), high up in the spruce hedge. It's one of my favorite birds, and very tricky to photograph as it is very shy. It feeds on ants and there is an anthill in the spruce hedge, and I can often hear the bird as it has a high call. But with it's green color it blends in perfectly with the tree branches so it's not easy to spot. Luckily I managed to take this photo before the bird flew away.

Female Woodpecker

During the last week this female Woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor),has been a regular guest at the bird feeders on the veranda.

Green Woodpecker

I was sitting at the computer looking out the open window when a green woodpecker, or a Gröngöling, landed on a branch on the birch tree. So I just stretched my arm out to grab the camera,stood up and managed to shoot one photo before it noticed me and flew away to the next tree. I did go out later for a better look at the bird but it was long gone by then.

The Woodpecker Family

Three woodpeckers flying in for breakfast at the veranda. There are around 500 000 woodpeckers in Sweden. Normally they eat cones or insects from dead trees, but this is much better.

Spot the Woodpecker

I could hear the drumming of this Woodpecker as I opened the door this Sunday afternoon. Here it is high up a Norway Spruce at Bergdalen. Looks quite good with the blue sky as a backdrop. Bigger Photo. I was going out because I was told that the Forsythia was blooming which is a bit odd for the middle of December. If you don't believe me press here.

Shot from my kitchen window this morning. A Great Spotted Woodpecker. Or a Hackspett as we like to call them.

Woody Woodpecker

Another proof of spring. I see more and more birds around me. All winter I have been feeding them. This is a woodpecker having lunch on my veranda. PRESS HERE for a larger version.
