Rural Alby

Alby II

A horse farm at Alby, an old rural part of Österhaninge. Bigger photo. Part of a zooming sequence. Zoom in on the yellow house HERE or out HERE, to see the rapeseed field. There are many things to see in this area including two old hill fort that I havent visited yet. If you want to see more photos from this area i have a flickr set called Vikingland.

I like the photo. The scene doesn't look much different from any farm found here in Ohio. Most of our farms are now devoted to raising corn, wheat and soy beans. I don't know of any farms raising livestock -- horses, cattle, sheep, goat, pigs. The livestock of yesterday has disappeared around here. The price of the land and the taxes on it means a farmer has to make a lot of money to pay the taxes and stay on the farm or keep it. There is no money in livestock here in Southern Ohio where I live.

I talked to a farmer a few weeks ago. He said that he gets half his income not from what he earns from his farming, but with subsidies from the EU.

Here in New York State, there are still a number of dairy farms. (No...not all of us live in New York City, or even near it)

I like the mix when some of the trees are fully green and the others still just didn’t notice that it’s spring. Green is lovely but it gets slightly boring when it’s the standard color. Any week now.
