Accident

Ammonia leak at the industrial park in Jordbro today, at a cold storage warehouse. I passed by twice, police and rescue personnel everywhere. Long queys along the roads with a hundred or so trucks that were headed to the industrial park. People were told to stay indoors in part of Haninge but the police I saw just gave me the heads up to bike through the area.

That Old Tree

Sunny, but cold and windy as I made my way to the old tree on Saturday afternoon.

Kolonilottsvägen

Lekplats

Swedish word of the day. Lekplats. New playground under construction at the park in Tungelsta. Looks like an old Volvo "rundnos" truck from the 1930s in there! A century ago, (give or take a few years), a man known locally as Cykel-Pelle lived in a house here. The old truck represents his business. You can also see a "torklada", representing the many laundry firms that operated here a century ago. And when it is all ready for the kids there will also be a building representing all the greenhouse nurseries from way back when.

Free Tuna!

People are panic-shopping in my area. Supermarkets are all out of toilet paper, pasta and other necessities. All thanks to the Coronavirus, of course. I often shop from home and got a delivery from Mathem yesterday evening. Quite a few items were missing from my order, and I also got a number of things that I hadn't ordered, including some tuna. One email later and it was sorted. I could keep everything and they gave 800SEK to shop for next time. Oh, and the cat will enjoy the tuna.

Weather Update

Bronze Age Grave

A cairn at the burial ground in Jordbro. Supposedly the oldest grave here is said to date back to the Bronze Age. I have heard from several people that there is some sort of shaman lurking around here sometimes, singing and dancing and what have you, but I haven't seen him or her yet.

Rätblock

Driftwood at my favorite beach, Årsta Havsbad. My first visit this month. Nice day, sunny and 10C when I arrived. Then the clouds moved in and the temperature dropped a bit. Rätblock is the Swedish name of the shape. Cuboid in English I guess.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Blåsippor

The ultimate sign of Spring. Anemones, or blåsippor as we like to call them. I found them while crawling around on all four at the burial ground in Jordbro earlier in the week.

Vegastaden

The plan was to show you quite a few photos from all the construction going on at Vegastaden (Vega City), so I decided to use a wide-angle lens for once. But as I figured the distortion might be too much for my liking and that is precisely what happened so those photos will probably never see the light of day! The good news is that I will go back next week with a 50mm lens and my trusted 70-300mm lens and shoot a number of panoramic images and they will look much better. Anywho, this photo shows three of those new buildings, here blocked by part of the commuter station.

That Old Tree

Overcast and 2C today as I made my way to the old tree.

Ikano

Ikano building new apartments at Vega Allé at the big project Vegastaden. Last I looked nearly all sold out. Facts and photos here. The location is pretty good. The new commuter station is 100 hundred meters away and the commuter train will take you to Stockholm in 20 minutes.

Swedish word of the day. Rullskidåkare. Rollerskier.

A Temporary Sculpture

Most likely gone today as 95 percent of the recent snow has melted away. Spotted at Ribby in Västerhaninge two days ago.

The Solution

Snow and ice-free walkways in Haninge for the last five Winters thanks to this machine, and it's driver.

A Winter View

And to think that just a couple of days ago people were out picnicking. This was the view at the pond at Stav yesterday.

Tilted

A sudden change in the weather. This was the parking area at the commuter station in Tungelsta on the "Lillgården" side yesterday after the snow fall.

Burial Ground

I spotted a couple of young mothers picnicking while walking through the old Burial Ground in Jordbro earlier in the week. It was a nice spring day with the sun shining from a clear blue sky. As I'm typing this two days later we have seen some snow falling fom the sky.

Beach Volley Anyone?

No beach volley just yet at Östnora.

Tussilago

Cycling home from Östnora on Friday I noticed something yellow by the side of the road. It was the first Tussilago of the season.

Blue Water Blue Sky

I took the bike down to Östnora on Friday. It was a fine day with a clear blue sky, although a bit too windy for my liking. This is a beach from my youth. There's a camping, a marina, a big grassy area, sandy beach and a few jetty's.

One of only two love locks at the pedestrian bridge connecting Sommarvägen with the Rudan nature reserve. So no need to remove the padlocks anytime soon.

It must be early Spring

The not so ugly duckling

She is a bit of a celebrity this white Mallard. I have seen a few photos of her this last Winter. She hangs out with the other ducks at the nature park Slätmossen in Handen.

After the storm

Don't have too many new photos to show you. No real inspiration at the moment. Spotted this fallen tree at the tiny beach at the Lower Lake at Rudan. All thanks to the recent storm Ciara.

Not the Golden Gate

As I'm typing this there's a ship on its way to Stockholm from China. Last I checked the ship was stuck in the Mediterranean because of bad weather. The cargo, a golden bridge, 140 meters long weighing 3700 tonnes. This is not the old bridge btw, but when I noticed this thingy by the side of the road to Alvsta I started thinking about that golden bridge.

That Old Tree

More storm damage to the old tree after Ciara. I had a feeling that might be the case. Since I started this project back in 2005 there have been at least five serious storms in the area. Including one lightning storm that I experienced firsthand.

Rumpbänk

Very new word of the day/year. Might even originate from Haninge for all I know. Rumpbänk. Butt-bench. Been there for a couple of weeks. You can rest here for a minute or so before continuing your walk around the lower lake. The municipality is busy setting up lampposts along the popular promenade to make it more safe.

Konstsnö

Swedish word of the day. Konstsnö. Artificial snow. Last Thursday the temperature dropped just enough to get the snow cannons working at the Rudan nature reserve. The first cross-country skiers arrived Friday morning and were able to ski on the 800-meter long track. Fast forward a few days and this is all that's left.

Classic Car of the Day

A 1959 MG MGA. Not a car that you would normally expect to see out on the roads in Mid-Winter Sweden. But this isn't a normal Winter. Spotted at the Rudan nature reserve in Handen earlier today.

Hesslingby Runestone

This runestone from the Viking Era has been nearly invisible for a long long time, probably hundreds of years. It was lying on the ground behind Kikarberget near Kalvsvik in Österhaninge, and if you didn't know that it was there it would be hard to find it. The runic inscription is very basic. There is a cross and a few runes that could read "fadiirt". Translated that could mean Father T. More info in Swedish here: bit.ly/3754Keh

The Man In The Window

That would be the name of my Nordic noir thriller. Did he witness the gruesome murder? Was he the brain behind it all? Where did he go? A "just in case" photo taken a few days ago. I could have used it in my Darkness project, but I took a photo of this building at the start of the project. It is the Attendo Retirement Home at Lillgården in Tungelsta.

Loviseberg

This house along Nynäsvägen in Västerhaninge was built by Aron Alfred Kalin back in 1903. He was a general contractor back in the day. He named the property after his wife Lovisa, a nice touch I think. Ten years later the house was bought by another Lovisa! Namely Maria Lovisa Hallberg. She was a local woman who had moved back to Haninge after living and working in Helsingborg.
