Skogsekeby Runestone

Skogsekeby Runestone

There are 23 known runestones from the Viking Era in Haninge. This is the Skogsekeby runestone at Skolvägen in Tungelsta. The inscription reads: Vigils and Gerhjälm had this stone raised in memory after their brother Gudbjörn- björn cut the stone.

Or as it's written on the stone: in uik-l(s) : a-- kiRhimR : litu : ri(s)- stin : iftiR : burþur sen : kuþbiarn : --biarn : hiuk : stin.

The three brothers Gudbjörn, Virgils och Gerhjälm all lived at Tuna in Tungelsta one thousand years ago. Every time I walk by a runestone I start to think about how it must have been to live here back then.

Glad the stone is still around. That was quite some time ago! You captured the etching very well.

Yeah, it also makes me think how. Nicely captured stone.

Fantastic! Has it been "restored"?

Interesting that those have been around for so long! It really does make you think about what life must have been like back then.

I love it. It makes the lyrics of various Amon Amarth tunes go through my head.

This runestone has been moved at least once. One of the brothers, Gudbjörn, made his own runestone back then. It had two roe deers on it. It's long gone, but it's said that it stood on their property at Tuna, on a field about a kilometre or so from here. I got that info from Helena Nyberg who lived at Tuna for many years, and who has written a few papers about the Vikings. The Swedish National Heritage Board are responsible for looking after the runestones. It is possible to "adopt" a runestone and clean it with water and report any changes to the heritage board.

I think that I am happy to live in today's world.

It amazes me that something like this has existed for so long. Can't help but wonder what these people were like and what their lives were like.
