Country road, take me home

Country, blues and rock´n´roll. Janine Nyman performing at CBR Stockholm a festival held at Kungsträdgården earlier this month. I walked around the park while she played a few songs. Not just country, and not just her own music.

The Blue Benders

Sommar på Medis. Forty free activities during the Summer. The square on Södermalm is called Medborgarplatsen. There's always something happening here. Cycling home a few days ago, I could hear the music, so I stopped for a listen. This time it was a blues band performing on what is an ice rink during the Winter. The Blue Benders. They have played together for around two years.

Songs for Soprano and Piano

Love Herrdahl and Junia Sjögren performing at Konserthuset. With Giacomo Puccini, Franz Schubert, Edvard Grieg and Ture Rangström on the program. The concert hall is on the same square as the weekly flea market that I often visit on Sundays, and these concerts are open for anyone to enjoy. Just before they started, Junia walked out of the concert hall and invited people to come in for a listen, which I of course did.

Dais Acapella

The vocalist group Dais Acapella performing at Sergels torg in Stockholm. I could hear them from a distance, so I rode that way, parked the bike and walked over for a listen. I usually carry two cameras with me, and I snapped the top photo from the stairs using the mirrorless Canon. I took the second photo with my old Canon 77D. That one is a panorama from four photos. I didn't notice it at the time, but it was heavily underexposed, so I had to fix that, which is fairly easy today thanks to modern technology like RAW-files and good software

Marching band

A walking concert with Hemvärnets musikkår Östergötland. From the Skeppsholmen islet to Stortorget in the old town. I met them at Blasieholmen yesterday as they marched by the Grand Hotel. They were followed by members from Sjöstridsskolan, the Swedish Naval Warfare Centre, from Karlskrona.

Street Opera

Two Summer street portraits of the opera singer and soprano Himani Grundström performing together with the tenor Björn Barje at Götgatsbacken on Södermalm. I don't know what they were singing as opera is not my cup of tea, but they are both professionals, so they know what they are doing. There is always a crowd gathering here when they sing, and anyone who feels like it can swish some money their way.

A Cappella

Two great voices singing A cappella outside the Zinnia restaurant at Götgatsbacken a few days ago. I have previously shown you both Jazz music from Leo Lindberg orgeltrio, and blues, with Ladies Got the Blues from this street at Södermalm in Stockholm.

Ladies Got the Blues

Once every week there is live music outside Hellstone Music at Götgatsbacken at Södermalm. I showed you a jazz band a while back. This time it was the blues band Ladies Got the Blues that were playing. I passed by earlier in the day when they were setting up and made a mental note to swing by a little later for a listen. If you would like to check them out, their YouTube channel is a good start.

Street Jazz

Cycling home after another Stockholm visit with the eBike I stumbled upon some live music at Götgatsbacken in Södermalm. This street is pedestrian only and always filled with locals, cyclists, escooter-nutters and tourists. And the many outdoor eateries are usually packed with people so you have to pedal with your eyes open so to speak. This is Leo Lindberg Orgeltrio, with the pianist Leo Lindberg, drummer Chris Montgomery and guitarist Max Schultz. I had to stop and listen. They drew quite a crowd and they are really good. All three are well-known musicians. They were playing outside the store Hellstone Music.

Rockabilly Fabulous

Accordion and double bass

Nice when there are several scenes with very different music, one for every musical taste. That was the case during Haninge Day in Handen on Saturday. These guys are called Haningemusikanterna and they had a very different audience compared with the punk band, the rapper Linda Pira and the dynamic duo Samir & Viktor.

Out of My Way

Skate Punk from the 1990s. That is what the band Out of My Way plays. They performed on a tiny stage during the Haninge Day celebrations in Handen today.

That Driving Beat

That Driving Beat on stage at Poseidon's Square in Handen during the Haninge Day celebrations on Saturday. Great performance as usual. They play Northern Soul. It was a busy day for the band, after this gig they packed up their instruments and made their way to another concert, that one at Hasselbacken in Stockholm at the Rockers vs. Mods meet-up. Kulmen

A collage of photos from Kulmen's gig a the cultural centre in Handen on Thursday evening. They describe their music as Indie, pop, shoegaze, trad. All their songs are in Swedish. The members are Stefanie Kasper (keyboard), Sanna Lindström, Johannes Borg (guitar), Dennis Johansson and Charlie Persson. www.kulmen.band/

Soppa&Surr

Fun event at the cultural centre in Handen last night. My photos of the old tree were shown as a slideshow as three musical acts performed. Top left photo shows the organizer behind the event, Gunnar Borg during the presentation of my tree project. Third photo top row shows Lasse Forslund in action, he did a version of King's Call by Phil Lynott. He played for half an hour. Second row to the right shows Lasse and the choir performing The Lumberjack Song! Before that a trio played a little Bossanova. That was Hansi Baumgartner, Michael Vinsa and Marianne Something. The last act was a band called Kulmen, I will upload a few photos of them tomorrow. There was soup for the hungry and beer or wine for the thirsty, I was thirsty.

Dust

Last act to perform on the stage at Poseidon's Square during Haninge Day on Sunday was Dust. They play Rock 'n' Roll! The band signed a record deal just two weeks ago and they recorded this gig for a future live album. If you recognize the singer, Roger Solander, it's because he also sings in another act that I have photographed several times before, Lugnet.

Ultrahuset Exhibition

The legendary music scene Ultrahuset at Källvägen in Handen ended after an occupation and a fire that destroyed the building. For eight years back in the 1980s it was a very active music scene and every punk band that ever existed probably played there. Now a quarter of a century later an exhibition about those years opened at the Handen Museum at Getporsvägen in Handen. During my visit to the museum yesterday a few people that were active during that period during the 1980s spoke about their involvement. Ebba Lundell

The annual rock festival in the park in Tungelsta is under way. The first artist to take to the stage was Ebba Lundell. It was her first ever live performance. She has a great voice. She sang five songs, a couple of covers, and a few afew that she had written herself. More photos to come in the next week or so.

VildirHeart

There was a lunchtime concert at the Cultural Centre in Handen yesterday. On stage were the band VildirHeart from Haninge. They describe their music as Alternative Pop. It's a family affair. On grand piano and vocals, Karin Dietrichson. She started the band three years ago, and when she asked her children to join her in the band, they said yes. On vocals then is Maria Dietrichson who you can see on the second photo, I liked her look, and figured I needed to take another portrait. On bass and vocals, Fredrik Dietrichson. Also in the band, but not playing today is drummer and percussionist Christoffer Lindgren. The band released their first album last year. It is called The Core.You can hear four of their songs at SoundCloud. A few songs also available at Spotify. On Friday they played a few cover songs from Hästpojken and Eldkvarn, and of course material from their debut album. If you want to see them check out this video. I got a copy of the album and after a first listen I have to say that I like it. It has a nostalgic feel to it. And what is a bit unusual, they sing in both Swedish and English. The Jordbro World Orchestra

On stage at the cultural center in Handen a couple of days ago were The Jordbro World Orchestra. Jordbro is a suburb to Stockholm. Ten thousand people live there. Most of them are immigrants. I was a student in Jordbro for three years a few eons ago. The orchestra, started by Michael Vinsa, a local musician who grew up here, won the 2011 Haninge municipality JIM award. Michael is the guy in the blue t-shirt. JIM stands for Equality, Integration and Diversity. The band have been playing a few local events and are slowly making a name for themselves. The members are both young and old, men and women, and they come from all over the world. JVO is also an Non Profit Organisation. More info in Swedish at their web site
