The maritime pilot
Albert Holm was a maritime pilot at Öja. He lived between 1848 and 1939. It is partly thanks to Albert that a road was constructed on the island. Having come halfway with that work Albert figured that he had had enough and he chiselled his initials by the side of the road at Saltmarsbacken and promptly told everyone that he had now done his part and that it was up to the young people on the island to continue with the road. Diabase sculpture made by Ole Drebold an artist who lives on the island.

A good bas-relief.
A nice tribute!
The artist have an interesting story. He was born in Germany. Moved to Sweden when he was in his 20s. After he heard about the island he wanted to visit, but there was a problem. As he was not a Swedish citizen he needed a permit just to visit the island because of the military presence here at the time. After sorting that out he arrived with his family and moved into a former school. That was many years ago now.
You tell many interesting tales, Steffe, including the one in the comment above mine.
Glad you like them jack.
