The changing of the guards

The changing of the guards Vaktparaden
I never plan to get these photos, I just seem to be around every now and then when they make their way to The Royal Palace. Here they are at Skeppsbron, very close to the Palace.

Hotel at Arenastaden

Quality Hotel Strawberry Arena The bubbly hotel B&W Black Holes
The 25-storey hotel next to the National football stadium, known today as the Strawberry Arena, at Arenastaden in Solna. It has 650 hotel rooms. I am yet to count all the windows, but they are all circular, like a football, of course. Thanks to the architect Gert Wingårdh. I have a lot of photos to show you from this part of Solna.

Sveavägen Cruising

Pink Cadillac Nice day for it Chrysler Sveavägen Cruising Sveavägen Cruising 1965 Plymouth Sveavägen Cruising 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Stockholm Cruising 1956 Bel Air
One Saturday afternoon/evening every month, the Swedish "raggare" and anyone else driving a classic car will take over the busy Sveavägen street in central Stockholm. It is quite a spectacle with hundreds of cars lining the street. Some drive up, park their car and then spend the rest of the day at a café table, or restaurant, enjoying something to eat and drink. Others bring their own table. And then there's the people that drive back and forth to be seen. The tourists love it, and are always very surprised. Some of the locals complain about the noise and what have you, but I guess that is the price you pay when you are living in a big city. I am still going through my photos, and will show you more in the week to come.

The Sultan's Copper Tents

The Sultan's Copper Tents Hagaparken Detail
A first bunch of photos from Hagaparken. A park in Solna, just meters from Stockholm and Lake Brunnsviken. These are the three copper tents. Koppartälten. Designed by Louis Jean Desprez in the 1780s. Supposed to look like something from ancient Rome. The idea of the park came from the king, Gustav III. He wanted an English garden. The tents were meant to be barracks for the Royal Guards. The middle tent was destroyed in a fire in the 1950s. It was rebuilt in the mid 1960s. Another renovation took place in the 1980s when a new part was added. Today there's a museum here as well as apartments and a café. There is no entrance fee to the museum. There is also a café at one tent. More photos from the popular park to come.

Bikupan/The beehive

Bikupan/ The beehive
A new parking garage close to Arenastaden in Solna. And not only for cars, as you can park a few hundred bicycles there as well, although I am yet to test that. Oh, and in glows in the dark. Designed by the architects ar Archus.

A fly-by

Helikopter
Walking around the Northern Burial Place in Solna I suddenly heard the sound of a low flying helicopter. I had time to notice a pair of legs as a helicopter flew by. It was the armed forces and the police in a joint training exercise. I had to be quick and change the setting to 1/100th of a second, which is my "helicopter setting", and one second later it dissapeared behind the trees.

Swedish-American

Swedish-American
Cycling past Nybrokajen I noticed a group of people at Berzelii park. A woman was ending a speech. She was followed by a man giving a speech. Some sort of Swedish-American organisation commemorating something, or someone. Bit of a mystery. Made for a good street photo though.

The Northern Burial Place

Johan Olof Wallin The Northern Burial Place Burial vault Norra begravningsplatsen At the cemetery Cemetery bench Johan Theophil Nathorst Wetterstedtska gravkoret Norra begravningsplatsen Eldbegängelseföreningen At the cemetery Skull and Bones John Burgman
A bunch of photos from my second visit to Norra begravningsplatsen in Solna. Very different from the other cemetery that I visit most every week. This one is much older and there are lots of famous people resting here. The graves are more "religous" in style and some are built to impress. More photos from other visits to come.
