The Dairy Farm

Stegsholm's Farm

At the Pasture

I visited the only remaining farm on the Gålö peninsula a few days ago. It is called Stegsholm. The farm goes back more than 300 years. It's a leasehold estate and for many years the Borg family have been living and working here. Today they run a dairy farm and they have their own bakery, and a popular cafe. The landscape out here is fantastic and the peninsula was declared a nature reserve a couple of years ago. Starting from the cafe you can choose to take the three kilometre long nature path. It will take you through a forest with majestic old oak trees and down to the bay. Along the way you will walk through the cow pastures. A few times every year there are guided tours if you want to learn more about the local fauna. On a visit to Gålö last summer I met the farmer Johan Borg, and if you are interested, here is that story.

Wonderful farm snaps, Steffe Meister! I always love the "Swedish red" color and to see the boards on buildings used vertically instead of horizontally like they are here. Det ar ju skit bra!

That is a nice barn! The pictures are beautiful, especially the sky in that first shot and I love the cows!

I sure could use being right there, in that cafe, next to that trail...

These are two really fine shots and that farm could be from Vermont but the cows are definitely not Holsteins.

My first thought was that the barns look like they could be in Vermont too, as Brattcat said. Sounds like a beautiful area and an interesting one to explore.

After taking your link back in time to your interview with him those are some hard working people. I'm not surprised that they are seeing some success. Beautiful farm too. Nice shots Steffe.

Looks like I messed up the html a little when I changed the size on one of the photos from flickr, but I have fixed that now. Hard working people they are. I met Johan and Åse at the cafe the other day, and we talked for a bit. I have one or two interesting photos from the farm and will show it to you in a day or three.

Once again, Steffe, I love the colours on old traditional Scandinavian farms and wooden houses; something we lack with our stone built UK farms. You obviously like the people, the buildings and the area, have you considered writing a social history of the local area?

That's awesome that it's such an old farm, has it stayed in the same family through the generations?

Gålö was once an island, and 800 years ago it was owned by the family that owned Årsta Castle. Many years later, in 1860 Prince Carl bought the island. He started an institution aimed a helping young boys away from a criminal life. The institution closed in the 1940s. The farm was used as the administrative headquarters. After it closed the Stockholm municipality bought Gålö and Stegsholm, and they still own it. The Borg family has been here since 1969.
