The Leaning Church Tower

The leaning church tower...

This is the medieval church in Österhaninge. It dates back to 1320, and is also known as Sankta Gertruds Church. Over the centuries the church has been rebuilt several times. It is said that the church is haunted and here is why: The 58 meter high tower was constructed in 1587. When the builder realised that it was leaning, he is said to have hanged himself up there. I don't believe in ghosts, but I did meet one person during my 100 Stranger Project, who works here, and she told me about the haunted church. Last October I showed you the tombstone of the famous writer Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865) , who rests at the burial ground behind the church.

That's amazing...1320? It's an incredibly beautiful building...here in Florida, anything over 20 years old we tear down and build something new. How crazy is that?

(I'm exaggerating a little!)

great photo and interesting story. It is such an old building. I love old buildings and great architecture. Since the US has only been around for 200 years, I am always envious of the historic buildings in countries like yours. Also, I really liked your Into the Mist photo, it is just stunning. Your Half A House was surreal. I am glad you enjoyed the Native American photos on my site, and yes it is amazing to watch them dance with 20, 30, 40 or even 50 hoops. Practice, practice, practice I suppose.

Leaning? I can see it but thought it was just a photographic optical illusion of some sort. I like the church and can't imagine how they ever found so many stones.

The fact that it's leaning makes it special, so a shame about the builder, if it's true...
