Where's the Fish?

Where's the fish?

The Ice Fisher

It's not a real winter without a few photos of the local ice fishers. So here are two guys I met at Lake Rudan on Saturday. Top photo shows Leif Lundin. Leif and the guy on the second photo are both members of the Lilla Fiskelyckan. That translates to The Small Fish Luck Club. But they had no fishing luck at all on this occasion, although they did plant some Rainbow trout in the lake later that afternoon. But as it was a beautiful day who really cares, fishing is really more of a social thing. Leif and Christer (whom I met and photographed here one year ago), told me a little about the ice situation here. First there's a very thin layer of ice, around five centimetres. Then there's maybe 15 centimetres of water, and then another ice layer. That second layer of ice is a bit thicker, around 30 centimetres. We also had time to talk a little about photography. Leif still has his old analogue Canon, but was thinking about going digital. I suggested an Canon Ixus or a Nikon Coolpix, so that he could document his possible future fish luck!

l'avantage c'est que le poisson est déjà congelé quand il sort ;o)) ils sont courageux de pecher par ce temps

Yes, where ARE the fish? Ice fishing is much more fun when the fish ARE bitting on the hook! Looked like beautiful weather anyway!

Ha! The first one is fantastic! The guy seems to be very bored!

I've got a Nikon Coolpix P90 that I take along for everyday shooting. It's lightweight, extremely versatile, has a more capable telephoto than my "grownup" Nikon digital cameras.

The only thing more boring than fishing is watching other people fish.

But these are nice pictures anyway. :-)

How very interesting! And the photos are so live and colorful. As I heard, Russian winter fishermen use vodka from inside to keep warm and interested.

Ah, they do look quite pleased with the day, even without making a catch. All the ice fishing shacks have been pulled in off the water here. That's a true sign of approaching spring.

And to think I used to think this was "fun." But Swedes are good at this kind of thing...at least the ones in Minnesota were...

Very nice portraits. I'll never understand why anyone would want to sit on a frozen lake to fish. If it's only to drink and be sociable go to a bar:)
