What are the odds?

What are the odds?
Heading home on Friday I noticed a cyclist walking his bike. That is never any fun. The chain, which was brand new, had broken, so the cyclist had time for a portrait. When I handed him my card he laughed. At me. Because we have the same name. Stefan Jansson. Never met another person with my name before. Stefan has his own company. He repairs musical instruments. When he is not out walking his bike you can find him at the aikido club in Brandbergen where he is an instructor.

How funny!
I wouldn't have thought your name was unusual, but then it isn't often you actually meet another with your name even if you see it printed somewhere.

So funny.

That must have been a surprise. There is a very senior US Army General, now retired, with my name. It freaks me out whenever I read an article quoting him.

The Associated Press reporter who covers the White House has the same name as my wife. My wife is in the newspapers fairly often for her work, and some people think that she is also writing news stories about national politics.

When I was in college in Washington, D.C. the President of the American Federation of Teachers and I had the same name. He lived across the river in Virginia, so whenever people from out of town called Directory Assistance and asked to be connected to someone with our name in Washington, the operator would place the call to me.

One time, my college roommate's girlfriend took a phone message over the weekend and wrote a note and left it in the room, but I did not see it until Monday. It was for the teacher's union President. I called his office and told his secretary that I had the same name as her boss and there was a message over the weekend that the meeting in Bekin, New York was cancelled.

She said "So that explains it. I just got a call from him and he said 'Why the hell didn't anyone tell me the meeting was cancelled,' and 'Do you know how hard it is to get to Bekin, New York, by 9:00 on a Monday morning?'"

He doesn't look to happy, his chain's fault, I guess... Aikido, bicycles: you do not have couches up there?

Odd to discover another "version" of yourself. I googled my name once. Aside from a few old references to me, I found an obituary for someone with my name.

That's a weird coincidence Steffe. I haven't met anyone with my name but apparently there's someone in Perth who looks exactly like me. I like Steffan mark 2's bike shadows :)
