Haninge is taking part in something called Sweden - the new culinary nation. Yesterday three (lucky), jury groups gathered at City Hall in Handen. One group, seen here, were to decide about the best locally made pastry. The winner gets a diploma and 5000 SEK. The winning pastry will also be served at all café's around Haninge for the next year. If you have read this blog recently you will know that I have spent a lot of time at a particular cafe. I have told the owner, Henrik, about this event a couple of times. Last Friday he finally decided to mention it to the pastry chef, Diana Nordin. She was a bit upset about being told about it with such short notice, but still decided to give it a go, and guess what she won! Here's what the jury had to say: A winner because of the design and the taste that shone in it's simplicity. An added bonus was the resemblance of a boat. Haninge has a long coast and a big archipelago so designing the pastry to look a bit like a boat was a smart move by Diana. Best Pizza was won by Isa Akan from Brandbergen, and best Herring by Lotta Nyman from Dalarö. There will be many food events in Haninge this week and from tomorrow anyone who wants to can try the school food at a few chosen schools. More facts in Swedish here.

Congrats to Diana and to you for getting the whole process going! I grew up on Swedish pastry! My dad grew "out" on Swedish pastry!
I wonder how one gets to be the "taster"? I'd like that job!
That pastry looks really good. The closest I can get to Swedish food is Ikea...
And I thought at first it was breaded fish with a fruit sauce. With a Swedish flag stuck in it, fish is always a good bet.

Yes I'd like to be on that jury too Steffe, so good that they entered the comp and a very good idea of Diana's to create the 'boat shape' that might have made the judges take more notice!!

Congratulations.
This reminds me of a big chili contest in Texas. The grand prize winner was a guy who called his cilil "Everyone's Chili." It turns out that he walked around to all of the other contestants' food booths, took a sample of the chili they were cooking, took the sample back to his pot, and mixed them all together.
When they found out what he had done they took the prize away.
I'm applauding here in Vermont. How I wish we could all have a taste of the winners.

That is a good question Kate. I was back at the cafe this afternoon for a quick cup of coffee and a chat with a friend. I also talked to the pastry chef Diana, and took a portrait of her. I might post it here tomorrow. I am yet to taste the pastry in question, but I might try one tomorrow.
It's not an easy job to get. One of the jurors was the Blacksmith that runs the Viking Market here in Haninge. but he was there to try the herring.
I'd love to try one of those pastry boats with a cup of Gevalia! (Gevalia - nar du far ovantat besok!)

I ate my first Apple Canoe today. And boy was it tasty. I gave my mother one, and she liked it as well.
