A surprise wildlife encounter

I was out trying to find any early signs of autumn when I nearly collided with this elk yesterday. I's a "fjolårskalv", a calf born last year. It was munching away in what was once a private garden with a few apple trees near the Rudan nature reserve. We were both equally surprised, but I managed to get the camera out from the bag and had time to snap a few quick shots before the "älg" decided to disappear into the forest.

Moose Encounter

I met a moose (Alces alces) today. I was on my bike and noticed the moose on a nearby field. He was heading for a garden with apple trees at Hammarbo. I took a few photos and a video. There's around 400 000 elks or älgar in Sweden. Every year 100 000 elks are shot during the hunting season which is now over. You can read more about hunting here. I don't hunt btw, I only shoot with my camera.

Elk Meeting

Elk (Alces alces) Hunting or Moose Hunting is a popular sport (or as the hunters call it wildlife conservation), in Sweden. This year some 90 000 elks will be shot. There will be 300 000 hunters sitting on their stools in the forests around the country starting this week in September. I don't hunt. I take pictures. I took this photo in a forest in Tungelsta on my way home. I saw the elk and had time to set up the camera for a few photos. If you want to learn more, the Hunting Association has info in english.
