Walk of Death (history lesson)

Walk of Death (history lesson)

These stairs are known as Sista Styverns Trappor. They go between Fjällgatan and Stigbergsgatan on Södermalm. Sista Styvern (it means the last Penny or the last bit of money one has) was a pub at the bottom of these stairs, where 500 years ago, prisoners sentenced to death by hanging, had one final beer before walking up to meet their maker. The hanging took place at the top of the hill known as Stigberget. If you arrived to Stockholm by boat back then you could often see the rotten bodies hanging there...
