Gone fishing

Often when I cycle home from Stockholm, I use a very narrow bike path that goes along a canal known as Riddarholmskanalen. It runs between Gamla stan and Riddarholmen. Above it, you will find a very busy road. I, for one, would like to remove that road all together, something not very likely to happen. Anywho, the urban canal is popular with anglers as are all waters around Stockholm, btw. Not sure what might have happened here looking at the two funeral wreaths. I nodded to the fisher before taking the photo, and he nodded back. The guy walking on the second photo is doing that on the very narrow bike path that can be scary to ride on during rush hour. Just a few days ago, local politicians took a decision to widen the bike path, but it will probably be a few years before we can see a result on that. The building that you can spot on the second photo is Riddarhuset. House of Nobility.

Summer Fishing

Remember those Winter scenes I showed you with the ice skaters out on the frozen lake. That was back in January. This is a Summer photo from the same place. The lake is called Drevviken. It can be accessed via four different municipalities. Haninge, where I live. Huddinge. Tyresö, and also Stockholm, where I snapped this. It is a little beach called Hökarängsbadet. A calm place, sort of. There is a lot of construction work in this area and had I turned around 180 degrees you would have seen a number of new apartment buildings.

Fishing from the jetty

The lower lake at the Rudan nature reserve on a moody November day. Looks like the weather has improved a bit. I bought another Canon lens the other day. At half price, a slightly used 60mm lens. Should be good for both macro shots and portraits. Might give it a try today.

Start 'Em Young

Probably the youngest fisher ever. The sun came back yesterday after a long absence. It was 5C when I took a few snaps down at the Årsta Havsbad beach. I was enjoying a light lunch, sitting on the big bench down by the water, when this young family decided to try their luck at fishing from one of the piers. The war ship in the background is the HMS Nyköping.

The Lone Fisher

I visited my favorite beach earlier in the week. No one was sunbathing just yet. But I did spot a lone fisher out on the Horsfjärden bay. In the background war ships at the the 1st Marine Regiment at Berga.

A Cold Day For Fishing

A cold day for fishing, but it is just a short walk from central Handen so a warm cafe is only a few minutes away.

Where's the fish?

This is Alexander. He was fishing from the board walk at Lower Lake Rudan in Handen when I met him. He is from Upplands Väsby (North of Stockholm). He and his wife (the heavily pregnant woman far away to the right), found out about this fishing lake via a internet forum and decided to give it a go. As we don't have a car, it seemed the perfect place with the commuter station so near Alexander told me. They are both students, have two kids with a third on the way. Alexander studies computer science at the Stockholm University, and will be able to work as a Systems Architect in the future. Unfortunately for Alexander he didn't have any fishing luck, but the wife (a certified nursing assistant studying to be a nurse), had already caught two or three fishes, so we know who the fishing expert is in this family!

It was a fantastic couple of hours. All the snow gone. Sun shining from a clear blue sky. 5C so I jumped on the bike. Headed for the beach at Årsta Havsbad. Quite a lot of people there enjoying the weather. Anglers everywhere, on the piers and in the water (the baltic sea in January can be a bit chilly). Took my usual promenade. Talked to some of the (other) anglers, no one caught anything while I was there. It felt like a spring day really, realised that I was singing as I biked my way back home!

Hooked on angling

Some anglers take their fishing seriously. This guy stood there in the Baltic Sea during my whole visit to the beach. The sea was so calm that the fishes probably saw him so I don't think he got any fish. From my visit to Årsta Havsbad.

The sound of silence

If you know me, you will know that I have a few favorite places that I visit as often as I can. Today it was time for a short visit to the beach again. It was a fantastic spring day. 15 C from a clear blue sky. I took a promenade down at the beach at Årsta Havsbad. Not a sound was heard. Total silence. In all I saw two people. Both fishers. They looked very concentrated. I don't think they got any fish but who cares on a day like this.
