Medborgarplatsen

My bicycle path changed a little last year when the city decided to move away cyclists from a part of the very busy pedestrian street Götgatsbacken, which means that I will often find myself riding through Medborgarplatsen where there is often protests, demonstrations and other gatherings. On this day I managed to miss the International Women's Day meeting at the square, but I still stopped for a few photos. Top photo shows Alice Bah Kuhnke, a Member of the European Parliament, meeting up with Anna Ekström, former Minister for Education, and a few other people. Next two police officers at Götgatan, and lastly a cool looking dude minding his own business on the side of the ice rink.

It was a cold Winter for August. So chilly that the city decided to protect him from the cold. Nice of them I think. Carl Eldh sculpture of the poet at the Stockholm City Hall Garden.

Sergelskrapan

One of the five highrise buildings at Sergels torg, nicknamed Sergelskrapan, behind scaffolding. Built sixty years ago, so the facade needed a facelift. All the windows will be replaced. It will look like it did when it was new with a bronze colored aluminium facade.

Feeding the birds

It has been a very tough Winter for the non-migrating birds in Sweden. I read a report this morning where they listed a 90% loss of some species because of the cold weather. Here at Norrström in Stockholm the city have fed the birds all Winter.

Ice on the bay

A view over the Riddarfjärden bay from Klara Mälarstrand, from where you can hitch a ride on a few different ferries. The bay was frozen solid for a month and people were enjoying the experience walking, skating, running, cycling out on the ice. The unique spire at the Riddarfjärden church will undergo a well needed renovation and will be removed later this year, hence the scaffolding. Oh, and as I am typing this, it is snowing again.

Colour is a kind of language

Spotted this artwork at Mäster Samuelsgatan. The same artist, Jesper Nyrén also painted a massive mural on a new building a few years ago at Hammarby sjöstad, in the same style. Not sure what this is part of, will have to Google that I guess.

Stand up for free speach

Part of an art installation at Sergels torg during the renovation of the speakers corner balcony at the square. The idea is that you could stand on top of some of the boxes if you would like to be heard. Looks a bit dangerous in the last shot though as it is a long way down should you fall. One of my Flickr contacts told me that when the renovation is over you can request one of the boxes from the city if you so like.

Nybrogatan

I parked the bike at The Royal Dramatic Theatre and walked up Nybrogatan, a pedestrian street, to Östermalmstorg, while snapping away left, right and straight ahead. It was a fine Spring day in Stockholm. Lots of people out in the sunshine.

Seven street snaps

Non Solo Bar. Gamla stan. Tullhus 3, Skeppsbrokajen, where there is a lot of work going on since a few years. Skeppsbro Bageri. Nice place with a good view over all the ferries coming and going. The af Chapman, hostel at Skeppsholmen. Relaxing on benches at Strömgatan with a view over the bird feeding area at Strömmen and on the other side of the water, the Royal Palace. People at Kungsträdgården with PK-huset as a backdrop. No water in the big fountain just yet. Beer O' Clock at John Scott's.

A sign of Spring

A chilly morning today. -2C. But it is supposed to get up to 10C in a few hours time. Been out on the bike three times now. And arriving home both on Friday and Sunday I noticed the first croci of the year on the lawn outside the house. But I was too tired to first go in, find the other Canon camera and attach the macro lens to it, but I did so yesterday afternoon. So here are my first real Spring photos of 2026.

Ten Spring snaps from the new square

Ten photos from the new square Södermalmstorg, near Slussen at Södermalm in Stockholm. It opened for the public last year, still some construction work going on, seen here the work on the new bicycle bridge. This is a popular place now. Lots of tourist here, resting, enjoying something to eat and drink in the Spring sunshine. Or just watching and filming the views towards the old town.
