Working at the Cemetery

A man up a tree

There I was walking around the cemetery, next to the Medieval church in Västerhaninge, looking for a photo that would fit in Julie's Taphophile Tragics, when I suddenly noticed a man up a tree. It's not the first time I have seen that, but it was the first time at a cemetery. And it was -10 C. I'm not a tree hugger, if that's what you think, said the man when he spotted me. Isn't it a little too cold to be out climbing trees today, I asked. No, it is much warmer up here then down there on the ground he told me. That's good to know. Anyway this is Thomas. He has worked at this cemetery for many years, and believe it or not, he was actually out tree pruning. We talked a bit about the cemetery and the people we both knew, or had met. Including the pretty priestess Sara that you have met on this blog a few times. I am not sure it might have been Thomas that was out grave digging here a few winters ago. Oh, and in case you missed it, I climbed up the church tower that you can see behind Thomas last summer. That story and a slideshow can be seen here.

  2. Funny catch. Judging by the tree branches they have been pruned many times.

  3. The work must go on, even in a cemetery in the "dead" of winter!

  4. Seems a strange time of year to be doing the pruning, but I'm sure he knows what he is doing!

  5. If I worked at a cemetery, I think I would rather be up in a tree rather than on the ground.

  6. It does seem to be the wrong time of year for this work but, I might be wrong.

  7. Ah, you can visit a cemetery in many ways apparently, why not in a tree, he will have a great overview.

  13. Everything looks so beautiful with the snow. Don't know that I'd want to be out in it.

  14. He sounds like he has the sense of humour required to work in a cemetery, Steffe! I think I can understand wanting to prune the trees now. All that hairy growth needs to come off, before the sap starts flowing the the change of season into spring.

Now to go out and have a look at the slide-show from when you climbed the tower behind this tree.

  15. Delightful story. Life goes on all around in places of the dead. Let us hope he was not digging by hand in the winter. I imagine the ground would be very hard.
