Weather update

Looking out a window two days ago this was the scene. More snow. So I took a photo. Then came a few weather warnings. The last such warning giving me hope as it promised several days with warmer weather and hinting that this cold Winter might be giving up! So today I will look over two of my bikes and prepare them for a test ride later today or maybe tomorrow. But as the snow melts, and it gets colder at night there will be a lot of icy roads so if I go out I will be very careful and only ride on the bike paths.

Motvindsrakan

I made up that word. But it means something like the headwind straight. It is the bike path that goes next to the railway line between Krigslida and Västerhaninge. It can be tough riding a bike here. I have an acquaintance that used to ride here almost every day and whenever it was windy he used to scream profanities which made it easier to cope with the strong wind. I haven't used my bike for a couple of months now, so no swearing for me here for a while. Oh, and my acquaintance has moved now and lives closer to Stockholm so he never rides here these days.

That Old Tree

The first visit to the old tree this year. -5C. Blue sky, no wind. A nice walk it was.

Beware of the cat

I took another Winter promenade this morning. -5C from a clear blue sky, which was nice. Spotted this warning sign at the corner of Vinkelvägen and Hagavägen in Krigslida. But no sign of the scary cat.

Available seating

Movement for every heartbeat. Well I did go for my morning walk, and I did see a few things normally worth photographing, but I could not be bothered and this was all I could come up with.

Still Winter

The good news is that it was 0C for a couple of hours today. Been a month since i was that warm.The bad news is that the forecast promises more snow. I snapped this shot while walking home from the recycling station a while back. A lamp post by the stream in the park in Tungelsta. I have had zero interest in photography for the last two months. Might force myself to go for a walk tomorrow morning and hopefully find something worth photographing.

Brandstationen

The former fire station in Tungelsta. It opened here in 1952. Before that, it was at another location for 20 years. My dad joined the service here when he was sixteen years old. It was a volunteer fire department, and most of the 20 part-time firefighters were just like him, working at the many family-owned greenhouse nurseries here. Dad was afraid of heights, so climbing the stairs can't have been much fun for him. One of my classmates, Krister also worked here for many years. The station closed in the mid 1990s. Later it became a youth centre, but it closed in 2023 and the property is empty today.

Core Annexet

Built as a church. The religious people from the Swedish Pentecostal Movement had a fight. Someone changed the lock. That ended that adventure. Next came a gym. After that, it became a café for six years. Now it is a gym again. Called Core Annexet. Yoga classes. Retreats, whatever that is. Group activities, sounds a bit suspicious. But you can also get married here, or have a party.

Februarihimmel

A mid-February sky. Watching the Olympics on my smartphone today as my Philips TV-screen decided to die. Probably something that the company did on purpose, as they want me to buy a new TV.

I am eating way too many semlor (plural), this bone-cold Winter. And I haven't used my bike since before Christmas. Maybe not a good combo.

The days are a little longer again. Which is nice. I snapped this photo while at Välsta the other day. I was thinking about walking over to the old tree, but could not be bothered. I really need to get out there again taking photos, but this Winter is a little too much for me at the moment.

Hello

It looks like we are getting a really long Winter. Not really my cup of tea. Snapped this shadow figure on a cold day when we had a blue sky for a change.

Wheely Cold

No bicycle weather anytime soon. A recent forecast from SMHI said that the cold weather will continue for another two months. Not sure I like that. I spotted this bicycle wheel at the Krigslida commuter station a couple of old days ago.

Mulsta

After seeing Sweden win Gold and Silver at the Winter Olympics yesterday I went for brisk Winter walk. Nice with a blue sky for a change. -5C so not too bad. Met a few people out running, but no cross-country skiers. This is Mulsta Länsmansboställe.

Bird tracks in the snow

It looked a bit artistic to me. The snow covers a big greenhouse that is not heated during the winter. Most likely it was a crow that landed there and skidded around a bit.

This way to the playground

The cold Winter weather continues. It was -10C, with the windchill factor as I took an evening promenade yesterday. The rocklösaån stream winds its way through the park in Tungelsta. There are two bridges and this one leads to a playground.

The sad remains at Graneberg

Graneberg at Södertäljevägen in Tungelsta. The last gardener here, Janne Sandh closed shop quite a few years ago. He still lives there and his daughter has her carpentry businnes here, but the greenhouse nursery is a sad sight these days.

The color boxes

Back in the early 1970s, I knew many of the people livig at these 1970s row-houses along Södertäljevägen in Tungelsta. Today only two or three. We used to call them färglådorna. The color boxes.

Quote of the day

Spotted this quote on a recent Winter promenade. "Any one can put the heat to the meat, but only a few can barbeque". Some sort of TikTok meme I think. It feels like the first BBQ of the year is still a long way away.

Available seating

On a field at Kvarnvägen, (Mill Road) in Tungelsta. Come Spring the girls that enjoy rabbit jumping will most likely be back here.

A chilly day to come

We are expecting a national ice day from 1900 hours tonight. Freezing temperatures all over the country for the next 24 hours. Sounds like real fun, or not. The cold weather is coming in from the east so we are blaming it on Russia, as one does.

Takstol

Swedish word of the day. Takstol. New café and more under construction in Tungelsta, next to the Rocklösaån stream. Shot over a fence in the dark.

Pizzeria Caprese

This building in Tungelsta dates back a century. It has housed the local grocery store, post office, cafe, private apartments, restaurants and more. Today there's pizza place here. For the first 100 years the building was white, but now it is red.

08 Burger

Two arson attacks at this fast food joint last Summer. With a new owner. Big police investigation. The owners decided to rebuild and renovate. That took until last week. In the meantime they used a van and sold their burgers and what have you from the van that was parked in front of the renovated building. Originally built by a classmate of mine a few eons ago. Back then it was called Sassas.

Torkladan

The museum in the park in Tungelsta. Operated by the local historical association, Folk & Trädgård. You can learn a lot about the local history in the little museum upstairs. Mostly about the 100 family owned greenhouse nurseries that made Tungelsta a little famous back in the day. My family donated a few photos and items to the museum. At the turn of the last century Södertörn also had numerous family owned laundries. It was the upper class in Stockholm that had their laundry sent to "torklador" south of the Capitol. Oh, and I am without broadband again. Not my fault, but I will probably not post anything until that is sorted.

The Brick Church

The brick church in Tungelsta was built in 1973. The architect was Rolf Bergh. The two Mandorla shaped windows were designed by the architects' brother, the artist Tore Bergh. Back in the seventies there was a youth centre in the basement, and me and my friends used to hang there. The reason for that was a miniature slot car track. Before the church was built there was a greenhouse nursery here owned by the Pettersson family. Behind the church there's a burial ground. The first people to be laid to rest there was from that family.

The old station house

A chilly evening promenade. After walking for maybe five minutes I realized that I only had my thin finger gloves on and not the warm mittens, so I cut the walk short. This is the old station house in Tungelsta. Designed by Ferdinand Boberg. It dates back to when the Nynäsbanan railway line was built. The first steam train rolled by here in 1901. Today you will find Handlaget there.

Time for a semla

Still Winter and I am not a fan. Normally I would still be out there snapping away, but not this chilly and snowy January. Instead of going for long photography walks I watch a lot of TV and this week I am enjoying the first Semla of the season.

Roundabout

Evening walk to the "återvinningscentral". These are the row-houses at Lillgården. I started a photo project back in 2014 when they started the construction here. Since then, they have also built a retirement home, school and pre-school.

The old convenience store

The first ever convenience store in Tungelsta was located at my great-grandfathers greenhouse nursery, of all places. Built 120 years ago, give or take. A few years later, a larger Coop store was built across the road, in this building at Södertäljevägen 15. It was run by kooperativa handelsföreningen. It lasted a little longer until a "real" store was built near the train station. In the Gröna Huset building. Since then this has been a private home. I snapped this photo a few evenings ago on my way home from the "återvinningscentral".

The Greenhouse

The greenhouse in the park in Tungelsta. Photographed a few days ago. Built by the members of Folk & Trädgård (the local historical association). Used for markets and what have you. There is a museum just to the left that tells the story about the 120 or so family operated greenhouse nurseries that once made Tungelsta a little famous. My great-grandfather opened the first one. There are maybe six left today.

Hammarbo

This is Hammarbo along Allévägen in Tungelsta. Next to the Hammar estate that I showed you yesterday. Built by a man from the same family, for a mistress if I remember correctly, so this property has an interesting history. When I was a kid a few eons ago it was a children's home, and I have read a few horror stories online from that time, and I also remember two scary looking kids that lived there, and you tried your best to stay away from them whenever you saw them. One evening I walked over to a childhood friends house and there was a kid there that I had never seen before. This is my new brother my friend told me. His mother worked at Hammarbo, and they had decided to adopt this teenage kid. Anywho, I have photographed this building many times over the years, it is newly renovated after being neglected for a decade or so. Not really sure how it is used today.

A good workout

Sergi hard at work. Originally from Ukraine. Lives with his family in Sweden since quite a few years. A good handyman. Works for my neighbour. Here he is clearing away snow from her roof. He fixed my kitchen floor a while back and just this morning we managed to carry up my Trekkrunner to the second floor where it is much warmer at the moment.

Rosie

This is Rosie. She is a Scania truck. The gal behind the wheel is Carola. She has a thing for the color pink, and for Cowboy hats. I met Rosie after unsuccessfully trying to make my way to the old tree a couple of days ago. Had to give up because of too much snow on the path. And speaking of snow, Carola was dumping snow on a field belonging to the Nedersta Farm. I guess Carola have been quite busy for the last few weeks and as I'm typing this it is snowing again.

The Krigslida commuter platform

One of the smaller stops along the Nynäsbanan railway line. The Krigslida station. In use since 1980. Sort of. There used to be another station just a few hundred meters from here, called Nedersta. This stop does not have a station house, just a platform that was redesigned 13 years ago when a second rail track had been constructed. And it is one of just two stations that does not have a bus stop close by. On this day, I was hoping that a commuter train would arrive, but I didn't feel like standing around waiting for one, so I continued my walk.
