Fifteen photos from Stortorget
The long procession made its way to Stortorget in the old town. There have been markets here for 800 years, but I seriously doubt that the square have ever been so packed with people as on this day. 250 people in costume. Locals. Tourists. And it was hot. I had to find shade every 15 minutes or so. Luckily, you can drink water from the fountain in the middle of the square, and we all did that. Also, all the restaurants and cafés were packed to capacity. Gustav Vasa, the king from 1523 held a long speech. He is the guy in the top photo, btw. His speech was interrupted by applause and shouting, something the old king seemed to enjoy. There was music from a choir, and also a fun fashion show where some of the colorful costumes were explained in more detail. It was hard business dressing and undressing back in the day, that's for sure. After all the speeches and singing, the people in costume spent most of their time posing for, and with, the tourists and the local photographers.
The ice cream shot is my favourite.
ReplyDeleteAnd he knew that I was going to capture that moment. My favorite shot, also.
DeleteNice to see the people dressed in their costumes.
ReplyDeleteThe guys have interesting additions on their outfits. ;-)
ReplyDeleteA toilet break could take a long time, they mentioned that during the presentation.
DeleteLove these candids very much. The costumes do have interesting designs.
ReplyDeleteInteresting costumes! I enjoyed seeing people having fun.
ReplyDeleteNice portraits! These are the kinds of street portraits I like to take at a variety of festivals.
