As I understand it winter logging is a good way to protect understory plants. And as all roads are frozen this time of the year they are able to support the weight of a logging machine loaded with fresh-cut timber. So this is probably a good time for some timber harvesting. I spotted this logging machine from Holmen Skog (the largest forest owner in the country), at Lyngstavägen in Västerhaninge today. From here the wood will be transported to one of Holmen's sawmills.

ReplyDeleteThese are very nice photos, and I am glad the loggers think about the understory. However, I know several small boys that are going to LOVE these pictures when I show the pictures to them. Trucks! Red trucks, doing work! What could be better?

Well, that does make some sort of sense, especially seeing how massively heavy that equipment must be.

Pretty neat piece of equipment there. It looks as though the snow won't slow it down one bit.

ReplyDeleteI'm no expert on forest management but I would say that it's done year round. Sweden is mostly forests after all.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago the south part of Sweden were hit by a storm (named Gudrun), that caused 75,000,000 cubic metres of trees to fall.
At least they are environmentally friendly.
